It was at the 2014 ThrillerFest when I found myself in the same room as Lee Child, David Morrell, and Anne Rice. I didn’t doubt that the writers would be gracious, but I was far too nervous to approach any of them and introduce myself. There’s always that mix of awe and uncertainty you have to overcome when you meet someone you respect. I stayed in my spot and hated my timidity.
I’ve since met Child, Morrell, and Rice, and they couldn’t have been nicer. But it occurred to us at The Thrill Begins that, especially for debut authors, one of the best things about attending ThrillerFest is the chance to meet writers you’ve long admired. There’s definitely a bit of hero worship in the mix, but, in my experience, the writers at the conference are warm and friendly in person. And, often, they soon become friends, and it’s an awesome experience to have those you admire turn into your peers.
ThrillerFest 2016 is July 5-9, and some of the top writers working today will be there. To get you ready for the experience, the eight authors that make up our Murderers’ Row, as well as myself (because this is an awesome opportunity) and our fearless leader Jenny Milchman each interviewed an author we admire…and, likely, one that you admire as well. We’ve done a lot of cool projects at TTB, but this was definitely among everyone’s favorites.
The list of interviewers and interviewees is below. I’ve had the chance to read every interview, and they’re all uniquely fascinating – often personal, occasionally hilarious, and always providing insights into writing, publishing, and the challenges these writers have faced. The first one, Elizabeth Heiter interviewing Tess Gerritsen, runs on Monday 6/20. We’re excited to share it, and all of the others, with you on weekdays from June 20 through July 1.
